The Art of Storytelling

The Friends of the Solon Library, in partnership with the Solon Arts Center, hold an annual meeting each year to recognize a community member or organization making a difference. This year, Rescue Village was selected as the local nonprofit to spotlight!

Ken Clarke, executive director of Rescue Village, said, “We were honored to be selected as this year’s non-profit. “We serve many in the Solon area. Many families actively support Rescue Village, and many have adopted animals too.”

“It is outstanding to be able to participate in this community event, and I hope that people will learn that we are here for them if they want to adopt, and also the things that Rescue Village does that may be less visible than adoptions, but are equally important,” he said.

The evening also featured Jenny Campbell, author and illustrator of The Cartoons of Rescue Village, published in 2023. The book is a joyful collection of Jenny’s cartoons spanning two decades of Rescue Village storytelling. At the event, Jenny sat down with Ken Clarke for an interview that had the room laughing and reminiscing as she shared her experiences as Rescue Village’s resident cartoonist.

Ken also shared how the book came to life thanks to the generosity of Richard and Karen Spector, whose support made it possible for all proceeds from book sales to go directly to the animals. Buy a copy here.

After the program, Rescue Village staff and volunteers chatted with community members about our many programs and services and how folks can get involved. Ambassador dogs Sky and Mazey greeted guests with wagging tails, along with two adoptable kittens, Sandpiper and Seagull, who charmed everyone they met.

“From our summer camps for kids, adoption counseling and even our humane law enforcement activities, we seek to educate people about why humane societies are essential for every community and how to care for our animal companions,” said Clarke.

A heartfelt thank-you to the Friends of the Solon Library and everyone who attended and donated to Rescue Village.
