A House Pig Finds Her Way Home

Minnie, a 10-year-old Vietnamese Pot-bellied mix pig, came to Rescue Village in November of 2021 from another shelter who knew about the excellent care she would receive at Billie’s Barn at Rescue Village. Minnie, who was part of a humane investigation case, had lived her whole life as a house pig whose owner neglected her.

When Minnie arrived at Rescue Village, she was seen by a veterinarian to ensure she was healthy, and a farrier to care for her hooves. She lived out in Billie’s Barn before it got cold, and then she was placed in a foster home. Foster homes are crucial to the lifesaving work at Rescue Village for many reasons. For Minnie, we wanted to learn more about her and find out if she had any issues living indoors.

We quickly learned that Minnie was litter box trained! She was very sweet and kept her room clean. When Minnie returned from her foster to wait for her new adoptive family, she stayed in a puppy pen in the dog pavilion. As puppies came and went, she waited and waited. As the months went by, Rescue Village posted stories of Minnie on social media, and while she proved popular, she still wasn’t getting adopted.
We posted again in April about Minnie the house pig needing a home, and this time she went viral. Within two days, we had 45 adoption applications for her from 8 different states — Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Florida, Pennsylvania, Texas, New Hampshire, and Michigan. The post ultimately reached 93,482 people!

Rescue Village adoption counselors spent hours making phone calls to potential adopters and they found the perfect match! A couple from Ohio with no children had been looking for a house pig for a long time – they had wanted a rescue house pig and not one from a breeder. Their wish had finally come true. Minnie now has her own bedroom, access to a fenced-in pasture, and gets lots of love, belly rubs and treats.

It’s rare for an animal to get more than a few adoption applications. Minnie is going down in Rescue Village history as one of the animals with the most adoption applications ever – she truly hit the jackpot!
