Meet Mary Lou, Peggy and Grayson – these sweet kittens tell an important story about the life-saving work Rescue Village provides — and that will hopefully inspire you to help animals like them that need us every single day.
In September, Mary Lou, Peggy, and Grayson came to Rescue Village, along with seven siblings, with the help of the Glenn and Jean Harnett Foundation from an overwhelmed caregiver in Mercer County.
The kittens’ living conditions were bad, and they were all very sick when they arrived at Rescue Village. Our medical team jumped into action. At just under one month old, many of them only had hours to live, and unfortunately, one of them did not survive the night.
All the kittens were infected with ear mites and had gastrointestinal parasites. It was also discovered that they were all positive for feline leukemia (FeLV)—something they can live a mostly normal and happy life with given proper veterinary care and nutrition. While feline leukemia can make it harder for us to adopt out these kittens, we knew that by giving them the proper care, time, and space so they didn’t spread the virus to other Rescue Village cats, they would all eventually find their forever homes.
Even among seasoned cat caretakers, there is much confusion about caring for cats infected with FeLV as compared to cats who have feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), so Rescue Village provided lots of information to shelter visitors to help them make their adoption decisions. At this time, Mary Lou and Grayson have been adopted and only Peggy is still waiting for her new family.
All nine kittens in the litter were given gifts of veterinary care, love, and the time they needed. Rescue Village will care for every animal in its care for as long as it takes to find the perfect home.
