Delilah was abandoned at Rescue Village in November when a couple tied her up outside. Before driving off in a hurry, hoping not to get caught, her owner left a lengthy letter about Delilah in our mailbox, explaining that Delilah was a neighborhood dog that was not properly cared for and was left to run loose, fending for herself, for many days on end.
Initially, the medical staff postponed the normal medical animal intake procedures because Delilah was so stressed out, having been left behind. But after a couple of days, they could give her vaccines, medicines, and a full exam. We could tell that Delilah had recently had puppies, had infections in both ears, and was experiencing bad digestion issues, so she was put on medication and prescribed a special diet.
Rescue Village works with animal owners every day when they make the difficult decision to surrender their pets. However, animal abandonment is illegal, even outside a humane society. A while ago, several puppies were found one morning inside a shipping box outside Rescue Village’s front door, and just like with Delilah’s abandonment, their abandonment was illegal too. Thankfully, the puppies barked inside the dark box, or we wouldn’t have known they were more than a shipment of kitty litter.
Delilah’s ear infections were clearing up with medicine, but as the swelling decreased, the vets found ear masses severely clogging both ear canals. Delilah’s specialty surgery on both ears will cost $7,000 to eliminate the chronic ear infections that will only lead to worsening pain and deeper, medically untreatable infections.
Thanks to the generosity of our community, Rescue Village can provide a place to stay and specialized critical medical care for suffering pets like Delilah, who deserve a healthy, happy life. Delilah is scheduled for surgery in January 2025.
