Yuki’s Long Road to Comfort

Yuki arrived at Rescue Village in early June 2025 when her owner, facing financial hardship and an out-of-state move, made the difficult decision to surrender her. Hoping their beloved 6-year-old calico would find the care and stability she deserved, they entrusted her to Rescue Village. Even then, something wasn’t quite right. Changes to Yuki’s chin and ear, along with thinning fur after a recent food change, raised early concerns.

From the moment she was examined, Yuki was met with attentive, compassionate care. The veterinary team discovered significant chin acne and a skin infection. Unsure of the underlying cause, they began treatment immediately with oral antibiotics and soothing topical care. It was clear that Yuki would need patience, consistency, and a home prepared to support her ongoing medical needs.

In mid-June, Yuki became ill in her kennel and was placed on medical hold so staff could closely monitor her symptoms. After she recovered, she was made available for adoption and soon found a home in early July. For a brief time, hope blossomed.

But by September, housing challenges brought Yuki back to Rescue Village. Though the return was difficult, she was welcomed with familiarity and reassurance. This gentle cat was safe, and her care would continue.

Her previous owner shared that despite ongoing treatments, medicated baths, and a carefully selected diet, Yuki’s skin issues persisted. Rescue Village’s care team revisited every detail, adjusting her nutrition to prescription wet and dry foods and specialized treats. When gastrointestinal issues followed, a dedicated foster volunteer opened their home so Yuki could be monitored in a calm, supportive environment.

By mid-November, it was clear that Yuki needed deeper answers. Her foster family noticed worsening symptoms, including crusting and oozing along her neck, constant itching, and increased thirst. Yuki returned to the clinic, where veterinarians began steroids to reduce inflammation and provide relief while further diagnostics were pursued.

A biopsy ultimately revealed hypersensitivity consistent with allergic dermatitis, along with a bacterial infection. After carefully reviewing her history across multiple homes and diets, the veterinary team made one final adjustment: a salmon-based diet completely free of chicken.

Slowly, Yuki began to heal.

Back in foster care, supported by the right nutrition and a steady routine, her skin cleared and the discomfort that had followed her for months finally eased. After nearly two months, Yuki was free from the skin issues that had once shaped her daily life.

Just before Christmas, her foster family, already deeply familiar with her care and needs, shared the news everyone had hoped for. They wanted to adopt her.

The home that had helped this resilient cat heal was ready to become her forever home.

At last, the mystery had been solved. A food allergy had quietly been at the center of Yuki’s long medical journey. Thanks to the compassion, patience, and dedication of Rescue Village staff, veterinarians, and volunteers, Yuki is now comfortable, loved, and able to simply be herself again.

When answers come slowly, Rescue Village remains steadfast, meeting each animal’s complex needs with individualized medical care, gentle perseverance, and the unwavering belief that every animal deserves comfort and a place to belong.
